Bailey Crafton and his brother, Logan Dunavent, were serious about Southaven’s Fire Academy for Kids, as the two wore colorful flame-decorated shorts on their third day in the training camp.
The two are among 20 kids taking part in Southaven’s first junior fire academy.
The weeklong academy started Monday, and by Wednesday most of the kids had already decided they want to be firefighters when they grow up.

The Leander fire department offers a seven-week citizen’s fire academy designed to educate and develop residents’ awareness and understanding of the role of the fire department within its community.
The program runs June 29 through Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Leander Fire Administration building at 101 E. Sonny Dr., next to the police administration building.

The eight-week academy will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday beginning May 26 and will last through July 16 in the training room at Fire Station No. 3. This is the first time the Coppell Fire Department will be hosting the academy.
“We have had interest from our citizens for some time to have a fire academy,” said David Malone, assistant fire marshal. “We wanted to meet their needs so we decided to develop the academy for them.”

The Citizen Fire Academy teaches citizens what the Central County Fire and Rescue department does through carefully planned simulated emergencies.

When most people think of firefighters, they conjure up images of what they have seen in movies, but beyond that, many in the general public don’t know what all goes into fighting fires.

The Midlothian Fire Department has twelve spots available for the upcoming Citizens Fire Academy. The Fire Academy is designed to give civilians the opportunity to learn more about the services provided by their Fire Department while giving them some hands-on experience. The participants will meet once a week on Tuesday night’s, beginning on May 17, 2011, for six different training evolutions. If you’ve always dreamed of riding around on firetrucks putting out blazes and rescuing people in harm’s way, the Arlington Fire Department just might give you the chance.
To help prepare for a coming wave of retirements, the department will soon open its application process to the public for the second straight year. Last year, a class of 15 trainees was selected from more than 1,900 applicants.
The department also created the position of recruiting lieutenant and promoted Nick Mundell to it in September.

15 local residents got a chance to go out on the Wilmington Fire Department’s rescue boat Tuesday.  But it was more than a cruise up the Cape Fear River.  It was a lesson.
This is week four for students of the Citizens Fire Academy.  Tuesday, class was held on board a 50 foot vessel.  It’s the same boat used in water rescues.
Tracy Garner is the captain of the boat.  He’s also a firefighter and a licensed diver.  He says the fire boat is used for everything from assisting in drug seizures …

The Fort Smith Fire Department teaches a citizens fire academy for regular people who want to learn all about firefighting.
“It takes more muscle than it looks,” said Tabitha Embree, a student in the class.
Participants get to work the hose, learn CPR, and handle explosives. “My favorite part I’m looking forward to seeing is the rescue tools,” said Embree, “I want to see how they pull people out of cars.”

The Topeka Fire Department announced Monday it will host its 2011 Citizen’s Fire Academy in conjunction with the Topeka Police Department’s spring academy.
The fire department will have a night session from 6 to 9 p.m. March 24 at 324 S.E. Jefferson.
The session will be similar to an open house, said spokesman Greg Bailey. There will be a hands-on fire extinguisher demonstration and training; hazardous material response team display; fire investigations unit session; technical rescue response team display; and a fire inspection unit session.
