A week-long intensive academy for firefighters and emergency responders will make its way to Summit County in June, offering local firefighters and emergency teams top-of-the-line training close to home and local businesses a fresh influx of customers.

Firefighters from across the Big Country learned how to battle wild fires.
Forty-eight firefighters completed the 9th Annual Brownwood Wildfire Academy. The academy demonstrated basic wildland firefighting. Participants took courses and had hands on training with water shuttles and emergency vehicle operations. Lake Coleman Firefighter, Ken Thibodeaux, said the extra training makes him more confident. “The more you get out there and practice, the more you’re gonna make sound decisions,” he said.

The U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) has completed development of the first two new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) courses in response to the U.S. Fire Administration Reauthorization Act of 2008. An additional six courses are in the process of development or revision. The Reauthorization Act included direction for the National Fire Academy to provide advanced EMS training.

The city plans to conduct an entry-level firefighter examination this summer.
For the first time in the city’s history, the examination process will require all applicants to obtain a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test certification, dated June 1, 2010 or later, issued by the State of Connecticut Fire Academy.
The deadline for registering for the spring 2011 CPAT program is Feb. 25.

When Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge began the citizen fire academy in 2003, he said he didn’t even think about needing an alumni association.
It’s a good thing he eventually did.
“We didn’t realize the benefit of having an alumni association,” Rutledge said. “But we quickly realized that these folks didn’t just want to come for 12 weeks and leave.”

The teenagers at the LBJ Firefighter Academy go through most of the same drills and training as every other Austin fire cadet.
