IRONTON, OHIO – Ask any small fire department, be it paid or volunteer, and no doubt one of the biggest challenges is the state-mandated continuing education courses that firefighters must take to maintain their certification.
Attending the necessary courses often meant traveling to a larger city and taking time away from work and family. There were cost involved, too.
Now, the State Fire Marshal’s Office has developed an online training program that offers a number of necessary courses not only to firefighters but also to emergency medical service technicians.

Clarksville, TN – Howell Albright, a 35-year veteran of Clarksville Fire Rescue, has been named Deputy Chief of the department.
Fire Chief Mike Roberts and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan announced Albright’s appointment to the position at Thursday’s City Council Executive Session.
Albright, 57, is a Clarksville native and the longest serving member of the fire department. He had been Chief of the Training Division for the past 15 years.
“I promise to work diligently to move the department forward,” he told Council members and those in attendance at the meeting.

Chambersburg, Pa. — Its been a week of hands-on training for young firefighters at the Franklin County Fire Chiefs’ Association’s 2011 Junior Fire Academy.
The participants, 14 to 17 years old, have learned about everything from how a fire grows and to working with fire hoses.
Each day starts with physical exercise and ends with visits and dinner at fire stations throughout Franklin County.
The academy, held at the Franklin County Public Safety Training Center, 3075 Molly Pitcher Highway, Chambersburg, will conclude on Saturday with graduation.

The Ghana Nation Fire Service (GNFS) has held a passing out ceremony, today, at the Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) to honor and welcome the recruited fire fighters into the service to serve the nation and the excellent
people of Ghana.

Seventeen-year-old Lauren Burnham is following in the footsteps of her stepfather, a firefighter in the Marcellus Fire Department.
At 14, Burnham decided she wanted to become a firefighter in a major city like Chicago or Los Angeles.
The 5’4 teenager said her stepdad’s colleagues laughed when she told them her aspirations.
“I like to prove them wrong,” Burnham, of Edwardsburg, said.

The Tallahassee Fire Academy will graduate its ninth class at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 16. The ceremony will be held in the conference center at Tallahassee Community College’s Florida Public Safety Institute.
Tallahassee Fire Department Captain Charles Dery, who serves as an instructor for the Tallahassee Fire Academy, will be the evening’s guest speaker.

Bailey Crafton and his brother, Logan Dunavent, were serious about Southaven’s Fire Academy for Kids, as the two wore colorful flame-decorated shorts on their third day in the training camp.
The two are among 20 kids taking part in Southaven’s first junior fire academy.
The weeklong academy started Monday, and by Wednesday most of the kids had already decided they want to be firefighters when they grow up.
