The Cincinnati Fire Department is bigger – as of today. Today is the first day of training for 39 new recruits. Local 12 News Reporter Larry Davis says they begin training today after passing the test three years ago. Among the recruits-a woman and her little brother. 
Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory welcomed the 39 recruits to their first day of training. City budget constraints delayed the process for three years after all passed the firefighter exam.

If you’ve ever washed your car in the driveway and got smacked by an unruly garden hose, you know it’s not the most pleasant feeling.
 
Now imagine wearing 60 pounds of gear and toting a fully-pressurized 3-inch fire hose — weighing about 300 pounds per 100 feet — up a ladder to the roof of a 1½-story building to douse a fire.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department has four new members, bringing the department’s membership to 86 firefighters.
According to Chief Chip Bancroft, James Czachur, Bryan Hoffman, Gypsy Adams and Mario Mendoza have graduated the Suffolk County Fire Academy, each completing 110 hours of firefighter training. They are now all certified as level I firefighters.
“Myself and the other chiefs are very proud of this accomplishment,” said Bancroft.
The fire department, according to Bancroft, is always looking for new members and is currently holding a recruitment drive with a goal to gain another 24 members, bringing the …

The Portland Fire Department is reviewing a training session last Thursday in which two new recruits were hospitalized.
The names of those involved have not been released, nor have their conditions, but the incident itself showed up on a national firefighter watchdog website, causing some controversy.
Acting fire chief, Stephen Smith, says the two recruits were transported to the hospital last week after falling ill during a running exercise.

Jordan Chapman, 19, of Barrow, and Mark Gibson, 20, of Millom, are two of the eight apprentices who are starting out with Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service.
Some 260 applicants applied for the scheme, which will give 18 to 24-year-olds the chance to work towards an Advanced Apprenticeship NVQ Level three diploma in emergency fire service operations.
During the two years they will experience a wide range of duties across the fire and rescue service, including conducting home fire safety visits and attending emergency incidents.

Firefighters are to be commended for the life-saving work they do every day. But another notch on their belt is the fact that they suit up in layers of clothing on the hottest summer days to fight fires and run into even hotter burning buildings. One of the Fire Academy training procedures is teaching firefighters to withstand the smoldering heat of a summer day in their fire suits.

The Springfield Fire Department is now accepting applications for the position of firefighter in order to establish a list for the next Fire Training Academy expected to start in late spring or early summer.

The Crafton Hills College 73rd Basic Firefighter Training Academy Graduation Ceremony took place at the Finkelstein Performing Arts Center on Nov. 18. The 17 cadets were honored by Fire Academy Chief Dan Sullivan and guest speaker Chief Steve Earley of the Riverside City Fire Department.
Certificates were presented by San Bernardino Community College District Trustee-elect Donna Ferracone, Vice President Cheryl Marshall, Interim Vice President Mike Strong, and Dean June Yamamoto.

The candidates had to sign up in person to take a written exam just to begin the process, said Erica Felix-Warwick, Tulsa Fire Department personnel director.
The firefighter hopefuls outnumbered the total allotted 400 exam positions, she said.
Of the 400 candidates that schedule an exam, only 40 will actually be able to begin training to become a Tulsa Firefighter, she said.

Given the task at hand and the amount of time allotted to achieve it, Del Rio Fire Department officials are calling its 100 percent pass rate on emergency medical certification tests a proud moment.
All 15 of the department’s recruit firefighters passed the national basic emergency medical technician test after a mere two-and-a-half months of preparation.
